HARRY THE SPIDER

The Play

The set consists mainly of a water spout attached to a building of some sort. The actual building is unimportant except in that it supports the water spout. To emphasize this the building should be kept simple, consisting mainly of two walls joined together at a 90 degree angle made of brick or cement block and almost entirely featureless. The building is on a side street in the business center of Anytown USA. The water spout is a black tube of metal running down one side of the building just a few inches from the corner. At the bottom it curves out a little ending in a small pile of leaves and such. At the top it is attached to a rain gutter. A very small camera and microphone are needed to see and hear Harry as he is just an eensy weensy spider. The play takes place in one act with four scenes. In general the play has very little plot and no point what-so-ever.

Scene I

Harry the spider is crawling along the ground looking for any unwary little creature to feast on. Looking up he sees this large flat surface shooting up a great distance into the sky. The faintest bit of curiosity finds it's way into Harry's eensy weensy brain.

Harry, "Hmm..."

A little further on he comes across the water spout which appears to be this large black tube of metal on top of a pile of leaves. Harry likes damp dark places so he begins to climb muttering to himself.

Harry, "Oh goody, a damp dark place to climb into."

And so Harry begins the enormous task of climbing up the water spout.

Scene II

As fate would have it a large cold front was moving in from the east threatening to ruin an otherwise dull and uneventful day. By midday dark clouds have moved in and it has begun to rain. Water starts running down the spout.

Harry, "Hmm..!"

Inevitably he is washed out into the street again and only just manages to latch on to a twig.

Scene III

Later that same afternoon the winds have driven away the clouds allowing the sun to once again show forth it's rays and dry up all the rain making the world a safe place for Harry once more.

Harry, "Whew."

Scene IV

Harry begins to move on, and again he sees this large metal black tube on top of a pile of leaves. Harry likes damp dark places and has a short memory so he begins to climb up the water spout again.

Harry, "Oh goody, a damp dark place to climb into."

As the scene closes Harry begins to think to himself that damp dark places are very over rated. And as the curtain falls we hear him say...

Harry, "Why the hell am I climbing up this water spout."
